Calligraphy Practice for Therapeutic Purposes Intervention in Kids with Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review
Abstract
This study explores the efficacy of calligraphy practice as a therapeutic intervention to support the well-being and developmental progress of children with disabilities. Despite growing interest in alternative therapeutic approaches, limited research has systematically examined the impact of calligraphy therapy on this population. To address this gap, this study conducts a systematic literature review (SLR) to synthesize existing research on the benefits, challenges, and theoretical foundations of calligraphy therapy for individuals with disabilities. Following established SLR methodologies, relevant literature is identified, screened, and analyzed to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of current knowledge. Key areas of investigation include the cognitive, motor, emotional, and social benefits of calligraphy practice, as well as its potential integration into therapeutic and educational frameworks. Data from qualitative and quantitative studies are systematically extracted and analyzed to provide an evidence-based assessment of calligraphy therapy’s effectiveness. Findings indicate that calligraphy practice offers multifaceted benefits, including improved fine motor skills, enhanced focus, reduced anxiety, and increased self-esteem among children with disabilities. However, challenges such as accessibility, individualized adaptation, and the need for structured implementation strategies are also highlighted. The study concludes that calligraphy therapy is a promising complementary intervention, warranting further empirical research to assess its long-term efficacy across diverse disability types. Recommendations emphasize the integration of calligraphy therapy into multidisciplinary support systems and policy frameworks to enhance its accessibility and effectiveness for children with disabilities.
