Parent’s Attitude towards Eye Screening Referral among Preschool Children Detected with Refractive Error in Selangor
Abstract
Refractive errors, such as myopia and hyperopia are prevalent eye conditions among children, often leading to significant visual impairment. This study aimed to explore the attitudes, awareness of eye health and behaviors of parents in Selangor towards eye screening referrals for preschool children with refractive errors, particularly in the context of digital device use and associated behavioral challenges. A total of 61 children aged four to six years from three kindergartens in Shah Alam, Selangor were included through purposive sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and screening records that captured demographic details, visual findings and parental feedback following referrals for those suspected with refractive errors. Follow-up phone interviews were conducted one month after screening to assess compliance with referrals. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS Version 28, applying descriptive statistics and correlation tests to examine relationships between parental awareness, behaviour and screening outcomes. This study found that 97% (n=59) of the parents were aware of the eye health importance, however most of the referred parents (39%, n=24) did not bring their child for a comprehensive eye examination. About 67% of parents (n=16) encountered difficulties in accessing further eye tests for their children, primarily due to the lack of time. This study enhances current understanding of parental roles in children’s eye care and highlights key area for developing effective strategies in improving early access to vision screening and prevent visual impairment.
