Reviewing Research Trends in Performance Measurement Systems: A 40-Year Bibliometric Study
Abstract
This study traces the evolution of Performance Measurement System research over the past four decades through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. Drawing on 1,903 publications indexed in Scopus between 1983 and 2023, the analysis integrates citation metrics, co-authorship networks, and keyword co-occurrence mapping using VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, and the Bibliometrix R package. The findings reveal publication trends, influential authors and sources, and the intellectual structures underpinning PMS scholarship. Results highlight the transition from financial indicators to multidimensional frameworks, the rise of supply chain and innovation-focused studies, and the growing influence of digitalization and sustainability themes. By combining performance metrics with thematic evolution and collaboration patterns, this study offers a holistic overview that extends prior bibliometric works. Practically, it provides researchers, institutions, and policymakers with evidence-based insights to guide strategic decision-making, foster collaboration, and identify emerging directions in PMS research. This work contributes to the literature by clarifying the intellectual trajectory of PMS studies and outlining pathways for future inquiry in the digital era.
