Negotiating Artistic Autonomy in China: Rethinking Pierre Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice through Songzhuang Art Village
Abstract
By reconsidering Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice via the evolution of Songzhuang Art Village, this paper investigates the negotiation of artistic autonomy within China's evolving art field. This study views Songzhuang as a dynamic field that is always changing due to interactions between internal artistic practices and larger social factors, as opposed to treating the art village as a permanent spatial and social construction. This study adopts a qualitative research design using a case study approach to investigate the transformation of the field structure of Songzhuang Art Village. Data are gathered through fieldwork, including observations and interviews, and archival research. They are then analyzed using an integrated framework that combines system theory with Bourdieu's theory of practice. This paradigm looks at how both internal and external factors, including as state power, international circumstances, market dynamics, changes in Chinese culture, and the culturally ingrained ideals and practices of artists, affect the internal structure of the artistic field. The results show that rather than going in a straight line toward either autonomy or institutional control, Songzhuang's artistic sphere has seen ongoing reconfiguration. Songzhuang's evolution demonstrates how artistic liberty in China is negotiated within a complicated interplay between market forces, state involvement, artistic agency, and more general socio-historical changes. This paper suggests a more context-sensitive explanation of artistic autonomy in modern China by extending Bourdieu's theoretical framework outside its Western setting and including the influence of outer field circumstances into the examination of artistic fields.
