Mapping the Landscape of Audit Judgment Performance: Emerging Trends and Future Directions
Abstract
Audit judgment performance is a central aspect of audit research, as it underpins an auditor's ability to evaluate evidence, assess risk, exercise professional skepticism, and formulate defensible audit conclusions amidst uncertainty. This study presents a bibliometric mapping of research on audit judgment performance using a cleaned dataset comprising 232 Scopus-indexed publications released between 1977 and 2026. Utilizing Biblioshiny, the study analyzes publication and citation trends, influential sources and documents, co-word networks, thematic maps, thematic evolution, and trending topics. The findings reveal that the field has evolved from early research on auditor cognition and evidence evaluation toward topics such as audit risk assessment, audit quality, professional skepticism, auditor independence, and digital-based audit judgment. Recent developments indicate growing attention toward artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, big data, data analytics, and explainable AI. This study contributes by clarifying the intellectual foundations of audit judgment performance research and identifying future research directions concerning human-machine judgment, data trust, digital audit readiness, and public sector auditing.
