Virtual Reality as Exposure Therapy: A Study on Reducing Communication Apprehension in Malaysian ESL Learners
Abstract
This research examines the efficacy of a Virtual Reality Intervention Module (VRIM) in alleviating communication apprehension (CA) and speaking anxiety (SA), while simultaneously improving oral communication proficiency among Malaysian pre-university ESL students. It tackles a longstanding issue in language teaching where emotional obstacles impede speaking proficiency, despite years of educational reform. A quasi-experimental design was conducted using 60 participants from six secondary schools in Kelantan, Malaysia, categorised into experimental and control groups. Data were gathered via the PRCA-24, FLCAS, and MUET speaking evaluations. Statistical methods, including paired-sample t-tests, ANCOVA, and multiple regression, were utilised to assess changes in CA, SA, and speaking performance, as well as to investigate the impact of perceived interaction and realism on learner engagement with VR. The findings demonstrated a substantial decrease in CA and SA among participants subjected to the VRIM (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 0.65), coupled with a notable enhancement in speaking performance. Regression analysis indicated that perceived involvement and realism were significant predictors of engagement, underscoring how immersive authenticity can enhance emotional regulation and communicative preparedness. This study represents the inaugural extensive quantitative examination of a VR-based intervention designed to alleviate emotional barriers in Malaysian pre-university ESL settings. It amalgamates pedagogical and psychological viewpoints to illustrate how VR-based exposure can cultivate learners' confidence, diminish anxiety, and improve communication ability. The findings highlight VR's potential as a scalable educational innovation for second language acquisition, providing transferable insights into how immersive settings help mitigate emotional obstacles in oral skill development.
