Field Study and Critical Reflections on the "Authenticity" of Shadow Puppetry

Abstract

This paper presents a field study that investigates the authenticity of Hunan paper shadow puppetry as a form of intangible cultural heritage. Utilizing a theoretical framework encompassing design, materials, craftsmanship, and setting, this study incorporates in-depth fieldwork, interviews, and historical analysis to assess the authenticity of Hunan paper shadow puppetry across multiple dimensions, including production materials, performance techniques, scriptwriting, and performance environments. The findings indicate that despite adopting various innovative adaptations—such as new technical methods and expanded performance content—to engage contemporary audiences, these innovations remain firmly rooted in traditional practices. By harmoniously blending traditional elements of design, materials, craftsmanship, and setting with modern influences, Hunan paper shadow puppetry not only preserves its unique cultural identity but also enhances its significance and relevance as an intangible cultural heritage. Thus, this study concludes that the authenticity of Hunan paper shadow puppetry is not only maintained but enriched through innovation, aligning effectively with the established definitional framework of authenticity.
