Abstract

This study explores how the sitcom Fresh Off the Boat fosters intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among Chinese EFL undergraduates within a semester-long course. Drawing on “foundation –form–competence” framework (Peng, 2020 et.al), it analyzes students’ perceptions and experiences through qualitative interviews. Findings show that serialized media, paired with scaffolded discussion and reflective writing, enhances learners’ (inter)cultural awareness, critical thinking, and emotional engagement. While language and cultural references posed challenges, structured mediation supported deeper ICC development. The study highlights the pedagogical value of integrating authentic media into EFL curricula and offers a context-specific model for intercultural teaching in Chinese higher education.
