The Stories of These Abilities: Cases of Community-based Organizing of Persons with Disabilities in the Province of Albay
Abstract
The study documented the experiences of persons with disabilities in organizing Disabled Persons' Organization (DPO's) in Albay, Philippines and proposed a social development framework for their empowerment. The researcher anchored the study on Social Development Theory, Conflict Theory, and Motivation Theory to analyze DPO stories, challenges, strategies and insights. Using a qualitative case study design, the team gathered data from 10 selected DPOs through focus group discussions and interviews.
Findings revealed that DPOs overcame significant challenges, including discrimination, limited resources, and bureacratic hurdles, despite starting small and without government support. Each organization developed unique strategies to navigate frustrations, promote equality, and advocate for empathetic PDAO (Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office) leadership by a person with disability. The study highlighted the importance of collective actions, skill-building, and community involvement. Ultimately, the research identified key components- from fostering healthy beliefs and developing individual potential to enhancing skills and recognizing achievements- that provide a roadmapfor sustaining inclusive and resilient DPOs and advance the persons with disabilities individual and collective well-being in Albay.
